DEADLINE: Reed Environmental Writing Award

The Southern Environmental Law Center is now accepting submissions for its annual Reed Environmental Writing Award, which seeks to enhance public awareness of the value and vulnerability of the natural environment in at least one of the following states: Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Virginia. Must be postmarked by January 2, 2014.

DEADLINE: Annual High Country News Student Essay Contest

In 750 words, describe how you or someone in your community is making meaningful strides to lessen modern Western society's impact on the environment. The contest is open to students between the ages of 17 and 24 (as of January 1, 2013) who are currently enrolled in a college or other institute of higher education. Entry deadline: Nov 27, 2013.

DEADLINE: United Nations Correspondents Association Award for UN Coverage

Presented for best written and electronic media coverage of the UN, its agencies and field operations, the Awards are open to all journalists anywhere in the world, in any media, for the best book, story, radio or TV program or series. The prizes amount to over $50,000 with $10,000 each for the main categories. Deadline is September 15, 2014.

DEADLINE: Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism

The Award is given by the New York Public Library to the author(s) of outstanding, full-length books resulting from print, broadcast, or electronic journalism that impacts public consciousness and policy around an important current issue. Winner receives a $15,000 prize; $1,000 awarded to four other top finalists. Nomination deadline is October 1, 2013.

DEADLINE: AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards

 The American Association for the Advancement of Science awards recognize outstanding reporting for a general audience and honor individuals for their coverage of the sciences, engineering and mathematics. Categories include print, broadcast, online and children's science news. Cash prizes. Deadline: Aug 1st.

The Blue Frontier Campaign's 5th Annual Peter Benchley Ocean Awards and Dinner in San Francisco will feature interview and press opportunities. The event will take place from 7:00-9:30 p.m.

DEADLINE: Knight-Risser Prize for Western Environmental Journalism

Journalists working for U.S., Canadian or Mexican newspapers, magazine, broadcast organizations (including cable) or online sites accessible to the general public are eligible to apply, as are freelancers. $5,000 prize. Deadline is March 15, 2015.

This American Meteorological Society Award recognizes outstanding science reporting and writing about scientific discoveries, principles, advances, and impacts in all media outlets including radio, television, newspaper, magazine, and online. Apply by May 1st.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: Wildscreen Panda Awards Film Competition

The biennial Wildscreen Film Festival in the UK, October 19-24, 2014, is a celebration of wildlife and environmental filmmaking. To qualify for a Panda award nomination and/or screening, productions must have an aspect of the natural world as the central focus. Submit your entry by April 30th.
