DEADLINE: Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington Program — Post-grad/Multimedia

This one-year, post-graduate, multimedia fellowship begins late summer 2015. The fellow creates multimedia projects for and manages and maintains the SHF Wire website; works with undergraduate interns to develop multimedia projects; and provides leadership to a team to produce news stories and projects. Includes stipend and free housing. Apply by April 1st.

The Alicia Patterson Foundation awards grants of $40,000 for twelve months and $20,000 for six months (includes covering costs of travel and research costs) to working journalists to pursue independent projects of significant interest and to write articles based on their investigations for The APF Reporter. Apply by Oct 1.

"Conowingo Dam Sediment Buildup Threatens Chesapeake Bay"

"On a hot summer day, it's hard to see how the Conowingo Dam could hurt the Chesapeake Bay. Anglers line the shore below the 94-foot high impoundment, casting out into the gently roiling Susquehanna River for rockfish breaking the water. Yet unseen, on the other side of the dam, millions upon millions of tons of sediment and nutrient pollution are slowly building up that could wreak havoc on the bay if they get through."

"NRC Team To Meet With Public About Uranium Mining In Va."

"RICHMOND, Va. -- When a team from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission meets with the public Thursday, the prickliest aspect of ending Virginia's 30-year ban on uranium mining will be up for discussion: processing the radioactive ore to create fuel for nuclear power plants."
