EDWIN LAKE
Hello Board Members and general membership.
My name is Edwin Lake and I would like to formally declare myself a candidate for a seat on the Board of Directors for the Society of Environmental Journalists.
I have been freelancing environmental and food stories, working primarily with the Food and Environment Reporting Network for the last two years. I have been a working journalist for over twenty years.
Most of my career experience has been in financial and business reporting. I have worked with a start-up S&P News, the Poughkeepsie Journal, MSNBC Desktop News among several other organizations.
I joined SEJ a little over two years ago now, and I have been impressed with the organization and some of the events and programs that it runs. I feel there is a space for me as a writer to grow within the organization.
I have been involved in other journalism organizations, specifically the National Association of Black Journalists, for just about all my career. I have witnessed firsthand how professional organizations can help individuals grow along with contributing their talents and ideas. So, since I am interested in food and the environment, now SEJ is a nice place for me to look to contribute my talents and work to make sure the organization grows and flourishes.
Professional organizations like SEJ do not work without dedicated people in key positions to carve out a path for the organization to move in. There is also a reward in working with serious and dedicated individuals on shared goals.
I have thought about the sacrifice it would be but the personal time I give up in service to the organization will be returned with the gratification which comes from serving society and the world.
I think I have come to the realization that I want to contribute something to SEJ. This is just one way to do it but, no matter what, I feel there is a place for someone like me within the organization.
Thanks,
Ed Lake
