Appropriations: Panel OKs Bill To Cut NOAA and NSF, Boost Satellites

"Senate appropriators approved legislation yesterday afternoon that would cut NOAA but boost weather satellite spending during fiscal 2018.

The Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations Subcommittee bill would give NOAA $5.6 billion, slightly less than the current fiscal 2017 level. It passed without controversy ahead of a full committee markup tomorrow.

Beyond allocating more money for NOAA's flagship weather satellites, Senate appropriators rejected many of the Trump administration's budget proposals to cut or scrap the National Sea Grant College Program, the National Estuarine Research Reserve System, and coastal zone management and resilience funding."
