Interior Proposes Tightening 1988 Offshore Drilling Safety Rule

"The Interior Department [Wednesday] proposed a new rule designed to strengthen the safety of offshore oil and gas production technologies as industry reaches into deeper and riskier waters."

"While much of the Obama administration's reform efforts following the BP PLC oil spill have focused on exploration, today's proposed rule would apply to the more than 3,000 offshore facilities involved in the collection and treatment of oil and gas from wells.

Regulations for production technologies have not been revised since 1988."
