"North Jersey Superfund Cleanups Plagued by Errors, Cutbacks"

"Since the [Superfund] program was launched 30 years ago, only three of the 13 [hazardous waste] sites in Bergen and Passaic counties have been fully cleaned. Eight sites have been on the list for more than 25 years, including the Fair Lawn Well Field.

Court battles with polluters, funding cuts and the complexity of removing toxic chemicals from soil and groundwater have long been blamed for the slow pace of cleanups. But the cleanups have also been plagued by mistakes, inattention and questionable decisions by the Environmental Protection Agency, which operates the program."

Scott Fallon reports for the Bergen Record October 10, 2010.
