"New York City’s Stonewall Inn was recognized Monday as the first national monument honoring the gay-rights movement.

Federal, state, and local officials gathered at the Greenwich Village site of the 1969 riots that became a watershed moment in the struggle for gay rights, and unveiled a new sign commemorating the Stonewall National Monument.

President Barack Obama announced the creation of the national monument on Friday, a designation that was in the works for two years. The monument protects 7.7 acres in the area, including nearby Christopher Park."
