GETTING THERE

Pittsburgh International Airport

  • Glenn Kaino’s "the Arch" is on display at the Pittsburgh International Airport, which manages an art collection of style, diversity and beauty to promote public art and enhance the airport environment. Photo courtesy of the Pittsburgh International Airport.

ADDRESS: 1000 Airport Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15231

  • ONLINE: www.flypittsburgh.com
  • LOCATION: 18.7 miles west of the Wyndham Grand Hotel
  • TRANSPORTATION: 28X is the magic number when traveling to Pittsburgh. While the city’s airport lies some 20 miles away from downtown, the 28X Airport Flyer bus makes your 40-minute trip to the conference hotel quick and easy. Leaving from outside door 6 in baggage claim, the 28X stops across the street from the Wyndham Hotel. And if you’re returning to the airport by yourself, the return bus stops right next to the hotel. The cost? $2.75 each way. The bus runs every thirty minutes, Monday through Sunday. There are other options, from cabs to limos. But if you want a fast, friendly trip from the airport to the hotel, take the 28X Airport Flyer. See the schedule here.
  • More information on 28X Airport Flyer bus:
    * Fare is $2.75 cash one way. Exact change required (though you could feed three $1 bills into the till if you're flush and forget).
    * The 28X, inbound and outbound, has stops on Liberty Avenue, across the street inbound from airport, and outbound to airport right next to the SEJ hotel, the Wyndham Grand. No cab or shuttle needed. It's a one-minute walk to the hotel.
    * Note: Cab from or to airport will cost you approximately $50 (each way, including tip), with travel time of 25-30 minutes depending on rush hour traffic. So, unless you're running late getting into town, or are worried about making your plane Sunday because you stayed too long at Phipps listening to Douglas Brinkley, you really don't need to spring for a taxi — unless you want to support the local economy and engage in cabdriver conversation about the Steelers. (All purpose opening, good anytime of the year but especially in October: "How 'bout dem Stillers?")
