| About Me | I have been a freelance writer and photojournalist since 1977 and for 2011-12, reported on environmental issues in New Mexico for the Navajo Times. I have also been writing commentaries on the effects of uranium mining and the nuclear industry in New Mexico for the Gallup Independent and on my website, including an independent series of articles on how the movie Avatar is like the history of uranium mining on Navajo lands, which have been picked up and reported widely. I have an MA in English from the University of New Mexico, and recently was awarded the Society for Professional Journalist's Top of the Rockies First Place Award, Radio Features, for my commentary on KUNM Public Radio: MLK Jr.'s Message in a Corporate Age. My first commentary for KUNM was Do we need more nuclear power plants? I also received 2012 1st place in News from the Native American Journalism Association for "Branded and Scarred" for a report for the Navajo Times, about a young mentally disabled Navajo man branded with a swastika, the first hate crime successfully prosecuted under the Obama administration's expanded hate crime laws. |
