About Me I'm a Portland-based writer with articles and essays published in the New York Times (newspaper and magazine), Smithsonian.com, Salon, Gourmet, Discover, Oprah, Utne, Preservation, Wildlife Conservation, American Archeology, and many others. I'm the author of a memoir, Stalking the Divine, which won the American Society of Journalists and Authors' 2004 Best Nonfiction Book award, and co-author of the New York Times bestselling Kabul Beauty School. My article from Gourmet about dining out in Kabul is in Best American Travel Writing 2008. I won the Ohio Arts Council's major fellowship for fiction in 2003 and, more recently, a major fiction fellowship from the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture. My article from Discover about burning coal mines was in Best American Science Writing 2011. My newest book -- "The Soil Will Save Us! How Scientists, Farmers and Foodies are Tending the Soil to Heal the Planet" -- will be published by Rodale on Earth Day 2014
