How Vicious Disinformation Campaigns Aim to Silence Women Journalists

New research by the International Center for Journalists [1] (ICFJ) for UNESCO reveals how online violence against women journalists is used to spread disinformation, undercut fact-based journalism and silence independent voices. No one knows this better than Filipino-American journalist Maria Ressa, who has experienced an onslaught of orchestrated online violence — from misogynistic attacks to death threats.

Join us May 6 [2] to mark World Press Freedom Day by discussing this devastating trend, in a conversation with Ressa and ICFJ Global Director of Research Julie Posetti, moderated by Google News Vice President Richard Gingras. They will discuss new ICFJ-UNESCO research on online violence as a weapon of disinformation and evolving strategies for fighting back. Ressa has long challenged tech giants to do more, and the panel will explore what needs to be done to combat this scourge.
