Am I eligible?
SEJ membership is open to journalists, and students and faculty at an accredited school or university. Those whose professional work includes public relations on environmental issues, or lobbying for environmental issues, are not eligible for membership in SEJ. What are the membership categories?
ACTIVE: Individuals are eligible to be an Active Member if they are primarily engaged in producing editorially independent journalism. Active Members shall not engage in paid lobbying or public relations work relating to environmental issues.
ACADEMIC: Individuals are eligible to be an Academic Member if they are faculty or staff members at a college, university or other school and have an interest in environmental issues. To qualify for membership as Academic Members, applicants must spend less of their professional work time doing paid public relations on environmental issues than other work.
ASSOCIATE: Individuals are eligible to be an Associate Member if: (1) they are substantially engaged in producing or supporting editorially independent journalism yet are ineligible for active membership because in addition to their work in journalism, they conduct paid public relations work relating to environmental issues, OR (2) they are working in fields closely related to journalism, AND in the majority opinion of the Board of Directors or its designee(s), applicants will contribute to the attainment of the objectives of the Society.
To qualify for Associate Membership, applicants must spend less of their professional work time doing paid public relations on environmental issues than they do producing or supporting editorially independent journalism.
STUDENT: Individuals are eligible to be a Student Member if: (1) They are pursuing a college or university degree, a high school diploma or some form of journalism training and (2) in the majority opinion of the Board of Directors or its designee(s), they will contribute to the attainment of the objectives of the Society. Student Members shall have all the rights and privileges of the Society, except that they shall not be entitled to hold office.
How much are the dues?
In recognition of differential income levels between countries, rates for members outside the U.S. and Canada are linked to World Bank rankings for high, middle and low income countries. Members in all countries can use retiree or student rates, if applicable. Note: Funds are in US dollars.
Membership dues are non-refundable, except in the case of a declined application.
