Navy Sought To Keep Treasure Island Radiation Concerns Out of Written Record [1]

September 5, 2012

Navy cleanup officials tried to discourage California state regulators from putting their concerns about possible radiation at San Francisco's Treasure Island into writing as part of the public record, the Bay Citizen reports.

Owned and used as a base by the Navy during World War II, the island in San Francisco Bay is pending transfer to the city for a redevelopment project under a 2011 deal. Recent information suggests the possibility that there may be radioactive contamination at the site, although it is unclear whether anybody has actually tested to see whether there is any.

Documents obtained by the Bay Citizen, an award-winning nonprofit news organization, showed Navy officials responsible for ensuring the site was properly cleaned up trying to convince California state health officials not to put their radiation concerns in writing.
