SEJ Launches Grant for Environmental Health Reporting [13]

The "Lizzie" Grant is named for Elizabeth Grossman, a longtime SEJ member who devoted her career to uncovering environmental health issues while tirelessly advocating for freelancers until her untimely death in July 2017. The grant will provide up to $5,000 to help cover travel and other expenses related to sustained coverage (e.g., a series of articles) of a particular topic in environmental health. It will be offered under the Fund for Environmental Journalism.

"Alaska’s Oyster Farmers Are Filling an Acidification-Driven Void" [14]

"The state’s oyster farming industry is gaining ground as growers elsewhere struggle."

"On a float house in Ketchikan’s George Inlet, dozens of cylindrical tanks teem with oyster larvae that range from tiny specks to small pebbles. These larvae number around 15 million, and once they’re done growing in the cold Alaskan waters, they’ll be sent to market across the state.

Homebuyers Not Told Houston's Reservoirs Would Flood Their Properties [18]

"When Jeremy Boutor moved to a master-planned community in Houston’s booming energy corridor, he saw it as idyllic. ... Then, Hurricane Harvey changed everything. As the downpours began and Boutor studied maps flashing on his TV screen, he realized that his home wasn’t at risk of flooding just because of record rainfall; it was also located inside one of two massive reservoirs that had been built west of Houston decades ago to protect the city."
