DEADLINE: Climate Beacon Newsroom Initiative [7]

Solutions Journalism Network and the Indigenous Journalists Association will bring together five U.S. newsrooms to receive 12 months of training and mentorship in covering climate topics through a solutions lens. Includes a $15K grant and travel stipend for the Indigenous Media Conference. Apply by Aug 31, 2025.

2022 David Stolberg Meritorious Service Award Winner: JoAnn Valenti [12]

The David Stolberg Meritorious Service Award annually recognizes an SEJ member for their exceptional volunteer work. The 2022 Stolberg award goes to JoAnn Valenti, who joined SEJ in October 1990. Her volunteer work for SEJ has been primarily behind-the-scenes work that quietly spread SEJ's name over several continents. She was a judge for SEJ's Rachel Carson Environment Book category for 14 years and also served on the editorial board and wrote for SEJournal.

"'Steam Loops' Under Many Cities Could Be A Climate Change Solution" [13]

"Across North America, hundreds of downtowns, college campuses and hospitals are heated by steam carried through networks of underground pipes. Electric companies installed many of these "steam loops" or district energy systems more than 100 years ago in older East Coast cities like New York, Boston, and Philadelphia."
