Thank You for Inspiring the Next Generation of Journalists [1]

December 21, 2018 — As a student studying journalism and sustainability at the University of Florida, I have ambitions. (Surfing on all seven continents is one.)

But I wouldn’t have had the ambition to place my first major environmental story without attending this year’s SEJ conference in Flint and learning from the smart and talented journalists in attendance.

The fantastic session on “How to Freelance and Not Go Broke [2]” provided me with the advice, tools, and resources that I needed to pitch and land my first major story, a feature on clam and oyster harvesters prepping for Hurricane Michael in The Gainesville Sun.

I’m grateful to SEJ for helping start my career off on the right path. I was honored to be taught by such amazing journalistic minds and look forward to learning much more from SEJ members in the years to come.
