Access Denied: Press Freedom Under the Current Regime

Journalist Brian Karem [1] and Stephanie Sugars of Freedom of the Press Foundation’s U.S. Press Freedom Tracker [2] will join FPF’s Caitlin Vogus to discuss the Trump administration’s attacks on the Fourth Estate.

Karem, a former White House correspondent for Playboy and political analyst for CNN, sued [3] President Donald Trump and his press secretary in 2019, after the first Trump administration revoked his press credential. Federal courts twice ruled that the revocation violated Karem’s constitutional rights, before he eventually reached a settlement with the Biden administration. Sugars and the Tracker document Trump’s (and others’) press freedom violations, including his retaliation against Karem during the first Trump term and his current attacks on the Associated Press and others.

When: Wednesday, April 16 @ 2 p.m. EDT / 11 a.m. PDT

We’ll be joined by:

  • Brian Karem, journalist and former White House correspondent
  • Stephanie Sugars, senior reporter for the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker
  • Caitlin Vogus, senior adviser at Freedom of the Press Foundation (moderator)

They will discuss their experiences with and reporting on adversarial administrations, the recent court ruling against the White House for barring the AP from its press pool, and other alarming efforts to sideline journalists — along with how we can push back against these threats to public accountability and the free flow of information.
