DEADLINE: Reporting on Water — An IJNR/Uproot Training Workshop for Journalists

The Institute for Journalism & Natural Resources, in partnership with the Uproot Project, announces a two-day, three-night program [1] for journalists of color who are interested in learning about covering the environment. Priority will be given to early career journalists, as well as veteran journalists who have recently switched to the environment beat. Participating journalists will stay at Stone Laboratory, The Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie, as they learn about reporting on water from leading freshwater scientists and veteran environment journalists.

This program is aimed not only at getting reporters up to speed on the challenges facing our freshwater resources — from pollution to climate change to non-native species — but also at providing training for early career reporters on the do’s and don’ts of covering the environment beat. We will spend time out in the field and in the lab as we discuss the challenges of translating science for wider audiences and telling accurate and compelling stories about complicated issues.

The workshop will begin and end in Toledo, Ohio and run from August 21-23, 2022. IJNR will cover all travel, meal and lodging expenses for participating journalists. Participating journalists must be or become members of the Uproot Project (there is no membership fee).

Application period closes Friday, July 22.

We will select up to 15 applicants; participation is open to journalists of color.

IJNR covers all program expenses (food, lodging, local travel) during workshops.
