Meet SEJ member Karen Pinchin! Karen is an investigative science journalist and trained chef based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She writes about food systems, climate change, ocean science and the culture, history and social justice threads that connect those fields. She studied journalism and history at Carleton University, professional cooking at Northwest Culinary Academy and earned an MA-Science from Columbia Journalism School, where she was awarded the Lynton Fellowship for Book Writing. Karen's first book, "Kings of Their Own Ocean [2]" — on a mercurial Rhode Island tuna captain and one fish he chased — has been hailed as "a cinematic triumph of narrative journalism” and won the Evelyn Richardson Non-Fiction Award and the Margaret and John Savage First Book Award. Most recently, she boarded a diving boat off Liverpool, N.S., in search of great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias). Karen is also a member of the National Association of Science Writers.

When asked how SEJ membership makes her job easier, Karen said, "Being an SEJ member has been one of the greatest joys of my career. From fabulous, inspiring annual conferences [3], to grant opportunities [4], to its daily newsletters [5] and craft workshops, SEJ is the best professional organization I could have possibly hoped for."
