Localizing the ‘Land Grab Universities’ Story

The Fund for Investigative Journalism and the Native American Journalists Association will co-host an online forum, “Localizing the ‘Land Grab Universities’ Story [1].”

When: Thursday, Feb 4, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. ET

The forum will provide insights and resources stemming from the groundbreaking investigative report [2] on land taken from Native Americans and given to colleges and universities. That reporting produced a database of nearly 11 million acres of land and the agreements associated with it. The forum will help state, local and student press learn how to access and navigate the data to localize this story.

The discussion will feature Tristan Ahtone and Robert Lee, who spent two years researching and reporting the story and wrote a New York Times op-ed [4] about the issue. They will be joined by Katelyn Vue, a student reporter in Minnesota who reported on the story in her campus newspaper. The discussion will be moderated by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Deborah Nelson, a longtime leader of the Fund for Investigative Journalism who serves on FIJ's Advisory Board and is an associate professor of investigative journalism at the University of Maryland.

This is a chance to dig into a groundbreaking work of investigative journalism and get concrete resources that you can use in local reporting. I hope you can join us.
