"The Forest Service plans to step up its use of prescribed fire — and it's counting on the South to help promote the idea.

Controlled fires are widely accepted in managing forests in parts of the South, and other parts of the country could learn from the experience there, the Forest Service said in a report outlining its wildfire strategy.

"For cultural, historical, and biophysical reasons, the use of prescribed fire is widely accepted in large parts of the Southern United States," the agency said in the report, which was released earlier this month. "The lessons learned by land managers and communities in the South might be useful in helping to overcome constraints elsewhere in the United States.""
