Quebec: "Stash of PCBs Shocks Pointe-Claire" [1]

"MONTREAL — Quebecers should be worried that it took 15 years for officials to clue into the fact that a Pointe-Claire company had a yard full of toxic materials, says one environmental expert, and the public should be demanding more transparency in the wake of the discovery."

"As first reported by the Journal de Montréal on Tuesday, Reliance Power Equipment has been collecting and storing electrical transformers that contain Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at its facility off Hymus Blvd. since 1998. It has been illegal to import, manufacture or sell PCBs in Canada since 1977.

A leak of between 800 and 1,100 litres of oil and oily water containing “significant concentrations” of PCBs in Reliance Power Equipment’s Pointe-Claire yard five months ago finally tipped off municipal and provincial authorities."

Monique Muise reports for the Montreal Gazette August 28, 2013. [2]
