"Stonewall Inn Recognized as National Monument to Gay Rights" [1]

"Federal, state, and local officials gathered Monday at the Greenwich Village site and unveiled a new sign commemorating the Stonewall National Monument. "

"New York City’s Stonewall Inn was recognized Monday as the first national monument honoring the gay-rights movement.

Federal, state, and local officials gathered at the Greenwich Village site of the 1969 riots that became a watershed moment in the struggle for gay rights, and unveiled a new sign commemorating the Stonewall National Monument.

President Barack Obama announced the creation of the national monument on Friday, a designation that was in the works for two years. The monument protects 7.7 acres in the area, including nearby Christopher Park."

Thomas MacMillan reports for the Wall Street Journal June 27, 2016. [2]
