Getting Down to the Wire on Roadless Rules [1]

August 29, 2001

On Sept. 5, 2001, expect crowds at Forest Service regional offices and some local offices around the country. This will be just five days before public comments are due on revising Clinton's 11th-hour roadless area rule [2] for natl. forests. Environmentalists plan to bring protesters and bags of comments in favor of keeping the rule to all regional FS headquarters, as well as local offices in Seattle and Laconia, NH.

The rule, which was finalized in December 2000, would prevent most extractive activities on 58.5 million acres of federal lands. See Tipsheet:Dec. 20, 2000 [3]; Jan. 24, 2001 [4]; and Feb. 14, 2001 [5].
