DEADLINE: Aronson Awards for Social Justice Journalism [1]

The James Aronson Awards annually honor original, written reporting that brings to light widespread injustices, their human consequences, underlying causes, and possible reforms. The Awards also include a companion Cartooning with a Conscience award. Deadline is Mar 18, 2019.

DEADLINE: SND Best of News Design Creative Competition [2]

Sponsored by the Society for News Design and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, this annual competition recognizes excellence in news design, graphics and photography. Extended deadline is Feb 28, 2025.

DEADLINE: Thomas L. Stokes Award for Best Energy and Environment Reporting [3]

Sponsored by the National Press Foundation, this award offers a $2,500 prize and citation for best analysis, commentary or reporting on energy, natural resources and the environment to a US-based journalist. Deadline is Mar 3, 2025.

DEADLINE: Taylor Family Award for Fairness in Newspapers [4]

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University is accepting nominations until Jan 21, 2026, for work encouraging fairness in news coverage by American journalists and news organizations. Winner receives $10,000; second and third receive $1,000.

"The Virginia General Assembly is expected to vote next year on whether to lift a 30-year moratorium on uranium mining in the state."

"More Radioactive Water Leaks at Japanese Plant" [7]

"TOKYO — At least 45 tons of highly radioactive water have leaked from a purification facility at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station, and some of it may have reached the Pacific Ocean, the plant’s operator said Sunday."

Day After Story on Weak Enforcement, Iowa Cracks Down on Polluter [9]

"Iowa’s attorney general is suing a corn processing plant, alleging it has released more air pollution than allowed for at least the past 18 months. Filing of the lawsuit came a day after the Center for Public Integrity’s iWatch News highlighted the state environmental agency’s passivity in curbing emissions at the plant in the Mississippi River town of Muscatine."

"U.S. EPA [Friday] released a reworked package of proposed rules to tackle toxic emissions from 201,000 of the largest boilers and incinerators nationwide, hoping to clear up complaints from manufacturing groups as the agency clamps down on the industrial boilers that are one of the largest U.S. sources of harmful air pollution."
