"In the Olympics of pollution, an environmental group has given Kentucky a gold medal of sorts for spewing the most toxic air emissions from its power plants, most of them fueled by coal."

"While many states had reductions in power plant pollution between 2009 and 2010, and the nation as a whole saw a 19 percent decrease, Kentucky’s emissions grew by 27 percent, or roughly 10 million pounds, according to a study by the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The national environmental group ranked Kentucky first for power plant pollution tracked by the federal Toxics Release Inventory, which covers mercury, hydrochloric acid, and other hazardous metals. That’s on top of other types of power plant pollution, such as nitrogen oxides, which contribute to smog."
