"Coal: Interior Hatches Plan To Save Navajo Power Station" [1]

"The Trump administration has a plan to help keep open an Arizona coal-fired power plant that is set to shutter at the end of 2019.

In a letter released yesterday, the Interior Department warned that it can force the Central Arizona Project (CAP) — the supplier of four-fifths of Arizona's water — to buy power from the Navajo Generating Station (NGS).

CAP is currently the largest purchaser of power from NGS but is actively pursuing cheaper power on the open market thanks to the regional rise of natural gas and renewables.

The project's board of directors is scheduled to vote Thursday on two contracts to buy power elsewhere after NGS closes."
