DEADLINE: Cissy Patterson Environment/Science Journalism Fellowships

Event Date:
October 1, 2015

An additional fellowship within the Alicia Patterson Foundation annual journalism fellowships is being offered in 2015. This new fellowship is specifically for science and environmental journalism and is endowed through a gift by the Cissy Patterson Foundation.

Cissy Patterson fellows will receive $40,000 to pursue an independent project of vital interest having to do with the environment or science. Alicia Patterson fellowships are awarded on a wider variety of subjects, including the environment and science. Several SEJ members are past recipients and judges for the Alicia Patterson fellowships.

Cissy Patterson was the publisher of the Washington Times-Herald. Her niece, Alicia Patterson, was the founding publisher and editor of Newsday.

The Alicia Patterson Foundation’s fellowship program is now in its 50th class of fellows.  Fellows complete four reports, which are distributed through the Patterson foundation and through the Institute for Nonprofit News.

The fellowships are open to staff writers, freelancers, on-line reporters, photographers and editors. The application consists of brief story proposals, a bio, three clips, references and filling out the one-page application form. Reference letters can be received for up to two weeks after the Oct. 1 deadline. You may start the fellowship either Jan. 1, Feb. 1 or March 1, 2016.

Applications (which are the same for the Cissy or Alicia Patterson fellowships) may be downloaded at www.aliciapatterson.org.
