DEADLINE: Himalaya Reporting Grant

Event Date:
June 25, 2013

HICAP Grant Progamme for Journalists

Under the Himalayan Climate Change Adaptation Programme (HICAP) , and specifically its communication and outreach component, the Center for International Climate and Environmental Research-Oslo (CICERO)GRID-Arendal, and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) will provide a limited number of grants to support professional journalists in reporting investigative stories on climate-related environmental issues, with special regard to adaptation measures. Applications are due June 25, 2013.

HICAP, a major initiative under ICIMOD’s Regional Programme on Adaptation to Change, is a five-year (2011–2016) applied and basic research programme. It focuses on five sub-basins of major Himalayan river systems: two sub-basins of the Brahmaputra and one each of the Indus, Ganges, and Salween-Mekong. The HICAP grant programme seeks to encourage journalists from the Hindu Kush Himalayan region to report on climate change across the five sub-basins: the upper Indus, Koshi, upper Brahmaputra, eastern Brahmaputra, and Salween-upper Mekong.

Journalists should cover climate change in these target areas in an innovative and creative way. They should be willing to examine all aspects of climate change and its impacts: environmental, economic, and social. They should also investigate how communities can adapt to change and suggest possible solutions for the problems encountered.

  • Journalists from all media outlets can apply – print, radio, television, and online.
  • Journalists of all nationalities may apply, however, grants will be preferentially allocated to reporters from countries associated with the project (including China, India, Nepal, and Pakistan).
  • Journalists working in non-English media are welcome to apply, but must indicate a proficiency in English, as English is the working language of the programme.
