DEADLINE: IWMF Howard G. Buffet Fund for Women Journalists

The International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) offers twice yearly rounds of funding for its Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists. The core goal of the Fund is to support reporting on issues of global importance that are typically under-reported. Applicants can apply for a grant to work in any format – including, but not limited to: print, digital, video, photography and new media. Applicants can also apply to the Fund for a grant to support professional development opportunities, such as security training, conferences and workshops. 2019 deadlines: round 1 — Feb 25 extended to Mar 9; round 2 — Sep 5.

While applicants can seek funding on any under-reported topic, in this round of funding only, the IWMF has set aside a discrete pool of money for small grants that support reporting on how local communities in the United States are affected by or reacting to the flow of undocumented migrants coming from Mexico and/or Central America. Projects pitched for this opportunity need to be completed and published/produced in under a year, and have a suggested budget of no more than $5,000.

IWMF grantees have produced an array of boundary-breaking and globally important stories that are reshaping how we think about the world.

Funding rounds will open for applications in January and July of each year; applications take 6-8 weeks to process. Applicants may apply concurrently for Reporting Grants for Women’s Stories and the Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists.
