I’m running for the Society of Environmental Journalists’ board.
I am an award-winning environmentalist journalist and author. I have won the California Newspaper Publishers Association award for Outstanding Public Service as well as awards from Best of the West, Sierra Club and Green Book Festival. My work on the poisoned fisher men and women of the Santa Monica Bay was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, and I have testified before Congress. I have worked with the Arizona Republic to produce the award-winning series The Poison Within. I represented the public interest at the National Academy of Sciences for over two years and am author of the Seattle Times best-seller Diet for a Poisoned Planet, The Safe Shopper’s Bible (with Samuel S. Epstein, M.D.) and Safe Trip to Eden: 10 Steps to Save the Earth from the Global Warming Meltdown. I am publisher of Healthy Living Magazine.
My mission is to selflessly advance all of the interests of environmental journalism from the regional to the international including 1) furthering our commitment to communities in reporting and recruitment as well to protect the rights of environmental journalists to not be killed for reporting the facts; increasing innovative methods of outreach, support, and motivation for local environmental reporting; 2) coordinating with local, regional, national and international journalists and their intersectional organizations for the advancement of major investigations; 3) vigorously advocating on behalf of freedom of information on the local, state, national and international level for access to information; 4) supporting local environmental reporting both online and in all media including social media, broadcast and print, creating more opportunities for freelance environmental reporting; and 5) finally, raise public interest in environmental journalism.
