Environmental journalists are needed more than ever. Outlets are struggling and staffs are shrinking, while our planet’s problems continue to deepen. This #GivingTuesday, your donations can help the Society of Environmental Journalists shine the brightest light on the darkest corners.
Last week, for example, The Guardian’s "This Land Is Your Land" project launched its latest investigation into threats facing America’s national parks. This deeply reported and stunningly photographed story was made possible by SEJ’s Fund for Environmental Journalism.
Since 2011, the fund has distributed more than $1.7 million in grants to support stories in this country and around the world.
Also last week, SEJ member Barbara Fraser told me that the grant she received made it possible to reach a remote part of the Amazon, leading to a story in Nature on cleaning up Peru's largest oil field. And thanks to the grant, she shared the journey with two Peruvian journalists who produced their own reports for local audiences.
These vitally important stories might never have been told without support from the Society of Environmental Journalists. In just my first two months as SEJ’s new executive director, I have seen the critical difference that SEJ’s programs like this can make — not only for our members, but also for the business of journalism and for the public that depends on it.
Every donation helps another story make a difference. Thank you for helping SEJ help its members tell the world's stories.
