SEJ Member Spotlight: Melissa Gaskill

An independent journalist for 18 years, Melissa Gaskill specializes in science, nature, and travel, primarily the outdoor or sustainable type. Her articles have appeared in Nature News, Scientific American, Men's Journal, The Atlantic, Wildflower, Texas Parks & Wildlife Magazine, Smithsonian, National Wildlife, American Way, Family Fun, Virtuoso Life, Austin American Statesman, San Antonio Express News, Texas Highways, Texas Co-Op Power Magazine, NurseWeek, Cure, Today in PT, and other publications. She's the author of Best Hikes with Dogs: Texas Hill Country and Gulf Coast (Mountaineers Books), now in its second printing, and frequently gives talks on hiking with dogs.

Melissa was a 2009 Ocean Science Journalism Fellow at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and a 2011 Fellow at the Metcalf Institute for Marine & Environmental Reporting Science Seminar. As a 2012 Fellow at Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment and Science, Melissa (along with other SEJ members) recently spent a week as a fellow at the Scripps Howard Institute on Science and the Environment, held at Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter. Fellows heard presentations on climate change, fraud in scientific studies, environmental restoration and current research, and made field trips to the Loxahatchee Wild & Scenic River, the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge Living Lab for the Everglades, Archbold Biological Station, and MacArthur Beach State Park, an important nesting beach for loggerhead sea turtles.
