December 4, 2018 — As a young journalist covering environmental policy, I suffer from impostor syndrome. When I applied for the Society of Environmental Journalists’ Awards for Reporting on the Environment last year, I told myself I was just doing it to get into the habit. So you can imagine my surprise when I won first place for my coverage of environmental policy in Texas.
This recognition from my peers told me that the work I was doing had value and that I was on the right track. The SEJ award has helped further my career — after the award, I received invitations to speak and moderate panels, for example.
But, perhaps most importantly, the award has helped me realize that I belong in the environmental journalism community.
The awards program is just one of the many ways that SEJ supports journalists, whether they have many years of experience or are just starting out. With your support, SEJ can continue to give journalists like me the confidence needed to persevere — and to succeed.
