The Current, Coastal Georgia’s only investigative nonprofit nonpartisan newsroom, is seeking an experienced environment reporter to cover Georgia’s 100-mile coast that includes Savannah, Brunswick and St. Mary’s.
This reporter provides original, in-depth journalism for The Current by independently examining local institutions, people, natural habitats and threats to the environment of Coastal Georgia. Experience with science reporting is preferred, as this reporter must be highly skilled at distilling academic research, as well as cultivating diverse sources and navigating relevant state and federal agencies. The ideal candidate must be resourceful, capable of generating and framing story ideas for quick-turn news and longer-term watchdog and enterprise work while maintaining rigorous standards for fairness, nonpartisanship and accuracy. The person must demonstrate an ability for making complex stories accessible to a wide audience, and a flair for narrative, explanatory and new forms of storytelling. Expectations include generating ambitious investigative projects, reporting original features and collaborating on newsletter content and reader engagement events. Experience with audio, video and data visualization is a plus. We are looking for team players, not lone wolves.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conceive and lead reporting on multi-month investigations.
- Show strong news judgment and clear ability to develop reader-focused enterprise stories.
- Write with authority and produce copy that does not require a substantial rewrite.
- Juggle multiple priorities and assignments.
- Generate work that is balanced, fair, accurate and complete, incorporating a diverse range of sources.
- Collaborate with newsroom leaders for community engagement and educational events.
- Produce sufficient volume of work to meet the needs of The Current’s audience.
- Collaborate with team members and colleagues at other news outlets.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Three or more years reporting with a news organization, with demonstrated experience covering a relevant beat.
- Proficient with public records and databases and state and federal laws related to public records.
- Must be willing to relocate to Coastal Georgia, as COVID pandemic restrictions end.
