Meet SEJ member Gloria Dickie! Gloria is an award-winning freelance journalist with a focus on environmental reportage and foreign correspondence. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Scientific American magazine, Wired and The Guardian, among others. She was an SEJ board member from 2016 to 2019. In 2021, she was a finalist for the Covering Climate Now awards in the Breaking News category and her coverage of a changing Arctic received the First Honorable Mention for Outstanding Beat Reporting, Large in SEJ's annual Awards for Reporting on the Environment. She has traveled on assignment to five continents, reporting from the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard during the polar night; trekking through the cloud forests of Ecuador in pursuit of the spectacled bear; exploring the sepia expanses of the Tibetan Plateau by wild cab; and tracking invasive mink on Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Her forthcoming non-fiction book "Eight Bears" will be published by W.W. Norton in 2023.

When asked if she recommends SEJ membership, Gloria said, "Yes! It's one of the most important steps an early career journalist can take and provides a sense of community for journalists, especially freelancers, who don't have work colleagues to share the highs and lows of this profession with."
