IJNR Workshop: Living with Wildfire

Event Date:
February 27, 2019

The Institute for Journalism & Natural Resources invites journalists to join us in Missoula, MT, April 4-6, 2019, for Living With Wildfire, a workshop exploring the ecological, economic, social, and public health impacts of wildfire, and what the future might hold.

Participants will:

  •     Hear from fire scientists about the latest research and modeling  - and how new breakthroughs are shaping our understanding of how fire behaves.
  •     Talk with climate scientists about predictions and scenarios - are longer fire seasons and hotter summers the new normal?
  •     Speak with public health experts about unprecedented smoke exposure in rural communities, how duration and density contribute to public health crises, and what can be done to mitigate these impacts.
  •     Learn from economists about the financial toll of wildfires, on the federal, state, and local level - and the financial future of forest management.
  •     Hear from community advocates who are educating the public about proactive steps they can take - from landscape maintenance to fire-savvy building techniques.
  •     Meet with the firefighters and foresters tasked with battling fires - and trying to mitigate their severity before they even start.
  •     Discuss what we as journalists can do better in our coverage of wildfire.
  •     Get out on the landscape to see recently burned areas, forest management practices, and other related sites.

The workshop will begin with a dinner presentation on Thursday, April 4 and end by 5pm on Saturday, April 6.

IJNR will cover the cost of lodging on the nights of April 4th and 5th, as well as all meals during the program.

Please note that staying overnight is not required for reporters within commuting distance.

There is a $25 registration fee.
