Residents Oppose Oil Waste Going Into Gulf Landfill

"PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. -- Waste Management on Wednesday began dumping oil-coated materials from Mississippi coast beaches into the Pecan Grove landfill, which it is permitted to do, but which is an activity local officials are against.

The local community thinks it's getting hit twice by BP's mess the beaches are fouled, and next the waste coated with water-borne oil will be buried in the nearby landfill.

The disposal of the waste came a day after Harrison County, Miss., supervisors agreed to subpoena representatives from the company to appear at its July 26 meeting, but Waste Management officials said it is a coincidence."
