About Public Health Watch

Public Health Watch is a nonprofit, nonpartisan investigative news organization founded in 2021. We illuminate weaknesses and injustices in the nation’s health infrastructure and policies, expose inequities and highlight solutions. Based in Austin but national in scope, we collaborate with media outlets large and small, and college journalism and public health programs. Our aim is to uncover truths that hold institutions and individuals accountable and compel change.

Job Description

The editor will work closely with the executive director/editor-in-chief to develop investigative stories and see them through to publication.

Duties include:

  • Editing stories for publication on the Public Health Watch website.
  • Discussing story ideas with reporters and preparing pitches.
  • Posting stories and visuals.
  • Assigning and coordinating photos, graphics and videos.
  • Managing media partnerships.
  • Assisting with social media.

This is an independent contractor position at $60 per hour, for up to 30 hours per week. It is funded through 2022, and there is a possibility of renewal or transition to a full-time position. The contractor can work from any location in the United States.

Requirements

  • At least five years of editing experience, preferably with long-form and investigative stories.
  • Strong ability to evaluate and develop ideas for stories that are revelatory and lead to change.
  • Excellent skills in managing and motivating people to produce high-quality work and in collaborating with media partners.
  • Familiarity with health and environmental issues is preferred but not required.
  • Experience and ease in operating in an all-digital environment, with knowledge of, or a willingness to learn, a variety of programs.
