Illegal Gold Mining, Mercury Contamination and Deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon [12]

This Bay Area Tropical Forest Network event takes place at 6pm on the Stanford Campus. Speaker Luis Fernandez, a tropical ecologist at the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology and director of the Carnegie Amazon Mercury Project, will discuss the dynamics that have made artisanal gold mining both the primary driver of deforestation in the Western Amazon and the number one source of anthropogenic mercury in the world today, and describe its effects on forests, wildlife and humans.

USDA Webinar - Illustrated Guide to Soil Taxonomy [18]

This webinar, 1:00-2:00 p.m. Central time, highlights the newest online resource for learning about Soil Taxonomy. The “Illustrated Guide to Soil Taxonomy” was developed for use by multiple audiences to gain initial understanding and insight into soil classification. The Guide is a highly illustrated derivative product of the 12th "Keys to Soil Taxonomy" presenting soil classification to the great group level.
