More Data Resources for Reporting on Energy

February 19, 2014

A new database gives you downloadable information on some 47,000 wind turbines in the United States. This allows environmental journalists to come up with all kinds of local, regional, or national stories about wind energy and its impacts.

The database was compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey, reflects industrial-scale onshore wind turbines through July 2013. It includes geographic locations and technical specifications of each turbine. It is presented in several forms, including Google Earth KMZ, browsable html maps, and raw data (comma-separated variable). USGS says the data have been verified and quality-controlled.
