SciLine Media Briefing: Climate Change Impacts on U.S. Agriculture

Event Date:
May 23, 2022

SciLine is a free service for journalists and scientists based at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest multidisciplinary scientific society. Editorially independent, nonpartisan, and funded by philanthropies, SciLine has a singular mission of enhancing the amount and quality of scientific evidence in news stories. Accuracy, clarity, fairness, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to evidence are core to that mission.

U.S. agriculture is under stress because of climate change. Farmers are facing drought, rangeland wildfires, and shifting distributions of pests and diseases that are impacting crops and livestock, while fisheries are being affected by warming waters. At SciLine’s next media briefing, a panel of scientists will describe how climate change is affecting crop, livestock, and fishery operations in different regions of the country. They will also discuss new approaches to help farmers predict and adapt to future change. Three experts will make brief presentations and then take reporter questions on the record.

When: 2:00 p.m. ET

Panelists:

  • Cynthia Rosenzweig, Senior Research Scientist, NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), Columbia Climate School
  • Mario Herrero, Professor; Cornell Atkinson Scholar; Nancy and Peter Meinig Family Investigator in the Life Sciences, Department of Global Development, Cornell University
  • Abigail Lynch, Research Fish Biologist, National Climate Adaptation Science Center, U.S. Geological Survey
  • SciLine Director Rick Weiss will moderate the briefing.
