Obama To Announce Final Truck Fuel Efficiency Standards Today

"President Obama is expected today to announce first-of-their-kind fuel efficiency standards for trucks, buses, and other heavy duty vehicles. He is scheduled to make the announcement at Interstate Moving Services in Springfield, Va."

"In May 2010, the president signed an executive order calling on the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to develop national standards for fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions for medium and heavy trucks.

At the time, the president said, "We estimate that we can increase fuel economy by as much as 25 percent in tractor-trailers using technologies that already exist."

By the end of 2010, a proposal had been published to establish standards for heavy-duty and medium-duty tractors, and for engines, starting in 2014. Trailers are not covered. Early reaction to the proposal was generally positive."
