DSG Webinar: What Journalists Need to Know About Solar Geoengineering
Solar geoengineering is receiving growing attention, bringing a complex and still-evolving field into wider public conversation. Journalists face a difficult reporting challenge: how to cover a field marked by scientific uncertainty, potentially far-reaching risks, uneven governance and sharply different views about whether and how research should proceed.
On September 1, the Alliance for Just Deliberation on Solar Geoengineering (DSG), together with Solutions Journalism Network-trained journalist Yessenia Funes, will host a free, interactive webinar designed to help journalists navigate this challenge with more context.
The webinar does not advocate for or against solar geoengineering. Instead, it will give journalists the grounding and tools to critically examine the evidence, competing arguments, uncertainties, risks, and governance questions shaping the field.
What we'll cover
The session will provide an accessible introduction to solar geoengineering: what it is and isn't, where research stands today, and what remains uncertain.
We'll explore:
-
The science: What's actually being researched, what do we know, and what remains uncertain?
-
Governance and accountability: Who is making decisions, what oversight exists, and where are the gaps?
-
The debates behind the headlines: How can journalists cover competing perspectives, risks, and tradeoffs without defaulting to advocacy or alarm?
-
Questions of power and equity: Who is involved in research and decision-making, who isn't, and whose interests and perspectives should reporters be seeking out?
-
Practical reporting approaches: How can journalists ask sharper questions about evidence, accountability, risk, and the public interest?
We’ll also introduce a solutions journalism lens for reporting on the field. Here, “solutions journalism” refers to a framework for critically examining responses to complex problems, not to defining solar geoengineering itself as a solution.
