U.S. President Donald Trump made further threats on U.S.-Canada trade early Monday, saying in an online post that tariffs on Canadian automobiles, car parts and steel will increase to 50 per cent on Jan. 1.
Trump also took aim at Ontario Premier Doug Ford on social media, calling him less intelligent than his late brother Rob, and a flunky of Prime Minister Mark Carney. Ford responded by calling Trump a loser.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling for Prime Minister Mark Carney to reconvene Parliament to get details on the proposed U.S. trade deal he rejected. Carney has said he will brief opposition leaders early this week.
Fifty per cent U.S. tariffs on about $28 billion worth of Canadian goods came into effect early Saturday after extended trade negotiations between the two countries fell apart. Carney said retaliatory tariffs will hit the U.S. starting Sept. 8."
