DEADLINE: AHCJ-CDC Health Journalism Fellowships [1]

AHCJ has teamed up with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – with the support of the CDC Foundation – for this national fellowship program for journalists. Ten fellows will be chosen to spend December 4 -8, 2011 studying public health issues at two CDC campuses. The competitive fellowships are open to professional journalists working in the United States. The fellowships include membership, travel, lodging and meals. Applications due Oct. 21.

"China Closes Solar-Panel Plant After Protests" [14]

"Beijing -- Authorities ordered a solar-panel manufacturing plant in eastern China to close after four days of protests by hundreds of villagers who have accused the facility of causing air and water pollution, Chinese media reported Monday.

The decision is an indication of the growing power of environmental protesters to sway government policy in China. As many as 500 villagers participated in the protests near Haining, an industrial city of 640,000 in coastal Zhejiang province.

EPA Grants Shell An Air Quality Permit for Arctic Drilling Vessel [20]

"ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Shell Oil Co. on Monday took a step closer to tapping vast petroleum reserves off Alaska's Arctic coasts when the federal Environmental Protection Agency approved an air quality permit for one of the company's drilling vessels."

"Fukushima Protesters Urge Japan To Abandon Nuclear Power" [26]

"Tens of thousands of people marched in Tokyo on Monday in the biggest show of public opposition to nuclear power since the start of the Fukushima Daiichi crisis in March."

"12 Held in Sale of Pest Poisons" [30]

Federal agents from several agencies arrested 12 in a sweep targetting illegal imported pesticides in New York's Chinatown. The unlabelled or mislabelled pesticides were especially dangerous because they could be mistakenly consumed and were potent enough to kill a child.
