"Lawmakers have reached a deal on federal cleanup standards for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in an annual defense authorization, sources told E&E News.
The compromise comes after months of disagreement from lawmakers over designating the class of 5,000 toxic chemicals as hazardous substances, which would spark federal cleanup.
Multiple sources have told E&E News that Democrats have agreed to narrow the hazardous designation to two PFAS under Superfund law instead of the entire class.
Those two chemicals are perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which are the two most studied types of PFAS."
