This journalism prize — the largest in North America — honors exemplary reporting on the environment by journalists in the United States and Canada. $75,000 cash award. Deadline for all works (except books) is January 30, 2012.

DEADLINE: Dart Awards for Excellence in Coverage of Trauma

The Dart Awards recognize exemplary journalism on the impact of violence, crime, disaster and other traumatic events on individuals, families or communities, focusing on the experience of victims and survivors, and contributing to public understanding of trauma-related issues. Cash prizes. Deadline is Jan 30, 2015.

DEADLINE: Worth Bingham Prize for Investigative Journalism

Administered by the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard, the Worth Bingham Prize honors investigative reporting of stories of national significance where the public interest is being ill-served. $20,000 prize. Deadline is January 23, 2015.

DEADLINE: Aronson Awards for Social Justice Journalism

The James Aronson Awards annually honor original, written reporting that brings to light widespread injustices, their human consequences, underlying causes, and possible reforms. The Awards also include a companion Cartooning with a Conscience award. Deadline is February 10, 2014.

DEADLINE: SND Best of News Design Creative Competition

Sponsored by the Society for News Design and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, this annual competition recognizes excellence in news design, graphics and photography. Deadline for US entries is Jan 28, 2015; non-US is Feb 4, 2015.

DEADLINE: Thomas L. Stokes Award for Best Energy Writing

Sponsored by the National Press Foundation, the Thomas L. Stokes Award for Best Energy Writing offers a $1,000 award and citation for best analysis, commentary or reporting on the subject of energy and natural resources, in any form — oil, gas, coal, nuclear, water, solar, etc. Deadline is February 14, 2014.

DEADLINE: Taylor Family Award for Fairness in Newspapers

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University is accepting nominations until January 23, 2015, for a single article, editorial, commentary, photograph; series of stories, photographs, editorials, commentaries; or a body of work by an individual journalist. The winner receives a $10,000 award and the second and third finalists receive $1,000.

The Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) through its Fund for Environmental Journalism (FEJ) offers mini-grant opportunities in support of reporting projects and entrepreneurial journalism ventures related to the environment. Deadline for the Winter 2013 cycle is November 15th.

The Associated Press and Google offer a national scholarship program intended to foster digital and new media skills in student journalists. The Online News Association, the world’s largest membership organization of digital journalists, administers the program. Applicants must be U.S. citizens at least 18 years old.
