UPDATE: SEJ "Condemns" Military Treatment of Blade Reporters

The Society of Environmental Journalists has written Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, condemning "in the strongest terms" the treatment of two Toledo Blade journalists March 28 by military police outside a Lima, Ohio, tank plant. The journalists were on public property when they were detained by military police. Photographer Jetta Fraser's camera was confiscated, even though she was taking pictures of what was in plain public view.

The duPont-Columbia Awards have recognized excellence in broadcast journalism since their inception in 1942. Created by Jessie Ball duPont as a tribute to the journalistic integrity and public-mindedness of her husband, Alfred I. duPont, these awards are now regarded as the most prestigious prizes in television and radio news, the broadcast equivalent of the Pulitzer Prizes. DEADLINE: IJNR Shale Country Institute

The Institute for Journalism & Natural Resources' Shale Country Institute will take place in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York from June 24-28, 2014. Shale Country will be all about fracking. We’ll talk economics, ecology, and environmental toxicology. We’ll hear about human health, water and air quality, and citizen science. And we’ll meet with scientists, industry representatives, concerned citizens, and many others in the forests, fields and neighborhoods where these important stories are taking place. SEJ and Capital Public Radio offer you the opportunity (Apr 11, 2014, 5-7 p.m., in Sacramento) to get some feedback on your ideas and meet up with fellow SEJ members. You’ll have two minutes to pitch stories to a panel of news and magazine editors and three minutes to pitch book ideas to a publisher’s representative. Open to all.
