The American Society of Journalists and Authors annually recognizes distinguished achievements in articles and books with a series of awards. Some categories are for the public, some for ASJA members only. Cash prizes; entry fees apply. Deadline: May 15 2024.

This annual awards competition honors excellence in digital journalism around the world. 23 categories include four awards with $32,000 in cash prizes: science reporting, community-centered journalism, investigative data journalism and climate change reporting. Enter by May 25, 2023.

Mongabay.org offers grant opportunities every month or two to support in-depth reporting on key environmental themes under a given topic. Top proposal receives a $12,000 stipend and up to $3,000 for reporting and travel costs. Next up: Could the focus on climate overshadow biodiversity in Latin America? The duPont-Columbia Awards have recognized excellence in broadcast journalism since their inception in 1942. Created by Jessie Ball duPont as a tribute to the journalistic integrity and public-mindedness of her husband, Alfred I. duPont, these awards are now regarded as the most prestigious prizes in television and radio news, the broadcast equivalent of the Pulitzer Prizes. Enter by July 1.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Journalism Ethics seeks applications for the first national Anthony Shadid Award for Journalism Ethics. Prize of $1,000 will go to the journalist (or team) for a story or series best exemplifying accountability, independence, reporting in search of truth, and minimization of harm to subjects, sources and the public at large.

Long Island University annually seeks nominations for the George Polk Awards for exceptional long-form investigative or enterprise journalism. Categories vary from year to year, but usually include environmental reporting and photojournalism. Cash prizes. Deadline: Jan 9, 2024.

This award enables students pursuing a science or medical journalism degree to attend the SfN annual meeting. Receive complimentary meeting registration, four nights’ lodging, $750 for expenses and a mentor who is an experienced professional journalist covering the annual meeting. Deadline is Jun 1.

These awards are granted for the best political cartoons reflecting the spirit and the principles of the United Nations. Open to political cartoons printed in any publication published anywhere, in any language. First Prize: $10,000.00; Second Prize: 5,000.00; Third Prize: 3,000.00. Enter by Nov 15, 2017.
